The Trailblazers
| Lesson Overview | This lesson is a set of brief biographies of some of the first African Americans to earn doctorates in chemistry. George Washington Carver is also included. |
| Learning Objectives | The objective of the lesson is to contextualize Percy Julian’s story by teaching about the African American chemists who came before him. |
| Lesson Concepts |
The life and work of Percy Julian, like that of any scientist, is related to the life and work of many other scientists. Student will understand that science advances because of the interactions between scientists and the influences of earlier scientists on those who come later. |

| Time Required | 30 minutes. |
| Student Ability Level and Grouping | This lesson is suitable for students of all levels. |
| Assessment | Students might be assigned to read about one of the trailblazers and create a poster or news article about that person. These posters could be placed on a time line in class. |
