Edward Chandler (1887–?)

A native of Ocala, Florida, Edward Chandler went north to Washington, D.C., to attend college at Howard University. After graduation, he went to Clark University in Massachusetts and earned a master’s degree. After that he went on to the University of Illinois, where he graduated with his Ph.D. in 1918. This made him the second African American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry, only two years after St. Elmo Brady became the first, also at the University of Illinois. Chandler went on the spend his career working in the chemical industry, mostly inventing new synthetic dyes.
