polymer - ancient Greek for "many parts", was given to materials such as cotton,
rubber, and some new synthetic materials in the late 1800s and early
1900s. The chemical nature of these materials was not well understood. It was eventually shown
that polymers are macromolecules, giant molecules made from thousands of
atoms. Today the words polymer and macromolecule are used interchangably.
